Laborers of Love

The Story of Betty Jo

Betty Jo Johnson, a native of Florence, Alabama, was never wealthy in terms of finances, but was rich in the love of her seven daughters. A talent that was undeniable for Betty Jo was her ability to cook. In the kitchen, she would conjure up delicious delicacies. Among them was a fabulous homemade recipe for hot slaw. It tastes so good it can be placed on anything. The recipe became so popular that local residents requested the slaw by the jar. Some loved it so much that it was ordered by the case.

Words from the Owner

“I remember investing many hours in the kitchen along with my sisters helping Mom to keep up with the ever increasing demand. She passed away in 2007. It was a challenge for all of us, but as sisters, we kept strong, stayed in contact and continued on. That’s the way Mom would have wanted it. As a labor of love, we decided to continue to make the slaw using Mom’s recipe. In fact, we started a business. This is our small way of ensuring that the memory of our mother will live on and that people will continue to enjoy the idea that she started.”
